I thought I’d draw your attention to a few autumn books which I’m particularly excited about.
‘Piranesi’ by Susanna Clarke – The new novel from the author of ‘Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.’ I’m reading this at the moment and I’m completely swept-up in it. Piranesi lives in the ‘House’, a vast labyrinth of halls with an ocean inside it. A beautiful novel full of mysteries (out now, hardback, £14.99).
‘A Snowfall of Silver’ by Laura Wood – A Young Adult romance novel set in 1931, this book follows eighteen-year-old Freya, who runs away to London to fulfil her dream of becoming an actress. I absolutely loved Laura’s first book, ‘A Sky Painted Gold’, so I’m very excited to see how she creates an atmospheric theatrical world (out 1st October, paperback, £7.99).
‘The Phantom of the Opera: The Graphic Novel’ by Varga Tomi/Gaston Leroux – I’ve been waiting so long for a faithful graphic novel adaptation of my favourite theatrical story, and this looks extremely promising! I love the artwork that I’ve seen so far (out 20th October, paperback, £14.99).
‘Shadowplay’ by Joseph O’Connor – I’m so excited for the paperback release of this wonderful book. A moving, atmospheric historical novel with a touch of the Gothic, it explores the life of Bram Stoker when he was manager of the Lyceum Theatre under the directorship of actor Henry Irving. My favourite book of 2019 (out 22nd October, paperback, £8.99).
‘Paris by Starlight’ by Robert Dinsdale – A tale of a magical, starlit Paris with citizens choosing to live their lives by night. ‘The Toymakers’, Dinsdale’s last novel, was beautiful, and this sounds equally enchanting (out 5th November, hardback, £12.99).
‘The Snow Song’ by Sally Gardner – Gardner’s last book for children, ‘Invisible in a Bright Light’, was wonderful, so I’m looking forward to her new novel for adults, about a woman who loses the power of speech when her village is isolated in snow. Just looking at the gorgeous cover makes me feel chilly.
