Description
Eleven centuries of history and heritage.
The village of Skelton-in-Cleveland has a documented history spanning eleven centuries. For much of that time, it was a rural community centered on the castle, old church and village green. The industrial and agrarian revolutions, by and large, passed it by. That all changed with the discovery and exploitation of the ironstone that lay beneath the East Cleveland landscape. The impact of changes, brought about by a sudden influx of miners and their families, can be seen even today.
From 2015 to 2020, the community ran a Townscape Heritage project which was finanacially supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This book was one of the outcomes of that project, making accessible to both residents and visitors more of the village’s history and heritage.
